Fake Reviews, Online Attacks, and How to Find Who Is Behind Them

Hen Oren, Founder and CEO

A restaurant gets eleven one-star reviews in a fortnight. A supplier finds the same unflattering article on four sites nobody has heard of. Both problems look identical from the outside, and they need opposite responses.

The first question is not how to repair the reputation. It is whether the activity is genuine, coordinated, or deliberately designed to cause harm.

What Does Online Reputation Management Actually Do?

Someone who changes what people see when they search your name. The trade has a few standard moves: publish material that outranks the bad result, ask satisfied customers for reviews, request removal where a platform's own rules allow it, and tidy up the profiles you control.

Done properly it is real work and it works. A single unfair review on page one, an old news story that no longer reflects anything, a namesake with a criminal record: online reputation management services handle all three, and they handle them better than we would. Any competent online reputation management company will.

How much does reputation management cost?

Online reputation management cost is quoted monthly, by every firm in the trade. Business reputation management for a small company commonly runs from a few hundred dollars a month into the low thousands, and the figure reflects the work: publishing, outreach and monitoring do not stop, because the thing being managed does not stop either. Online reputation services for a brand with several markets cost several times that.

Ongoing monitoring at agreed thresholds is part of what UnderWave offers too, once the source is known: the threshold decides when you hear from us, and the report says what moved and who moved it.

Personal online reputation management is the same service, priced for one name. Agencies sell it as online reputation management for individuals and the mechanics are unchanged. So is the limitation below.

Where reputation management stops working

Every one of those moves assumes the material came from real people with real experiences. When that assumption fails, the moves fail with it, and the monthly invoice does not.

  • Push it down the page Does nothing if the account that wrote it has never bought anything from anyone, and never intended to.
  • Ask for more positive reviews Does nothing when the other side can produce forty more by Friday.
  • Request removal Does nothing when the story is technically accurate and the coordination is in the timing.

Five signals, none of them conclusive on its own. This is where fake review investigation begins: looking for patterns across accounts, timing, content, platforms, and other digital traces.

Who Is Behind the Attack?

That is the real investigative question.

An online reputation management agency works on the output. Establishing who produced it, whether it was paid for, and whether it is one party wearing several names is an investigation, and it uses the methods of any other identity work: account histories, registration traces, writing patterns, timing, payment trails where they surface.

The same approach can reveal whether several accounts belong to one operator, whether activity is coordinated across platforms, and whether the apparent reviewers have any connection to the business or its competitors.

Knowing who changes what you can do next. A named party can be written to, sued, reported to a platform with evidence rather than a complaint, or raised in the negotiation the campaign was meant to influence.

What we do

Our role goes beyond identifying who is behind a reputation threat. We uncover the people, accounts, networks and activity involved, help shape the response, support content removal where appropriate, and continue monitoring the threat as it develops.

The honest division: a single unfair review that is genuinely somebody’s opinion is agency work, and we will tell you so. Eleven reviews in a fortnight from accounts created in the same month leaves the who unanswered, and every month of management until then is spent on the symptom.
